A map can show you where to go. But it can’t show you everything worth finding.
More Than the Map is a travel and discovery publication for curious travelers who want to look a little closer, wander a little further, and experience more than the obvious.
We explore the places, experiences, stories, and small discoveries that can turn a trip into something memorable. Sometimes that means finding a hidden café on a quiet street. Sometimes it means taking a trail beyond the crowded viewpoint, discovering a beautiful bookstore, wandering through an old neighborhood, or finding a small town that deserves more attention.
What More Than the Map Is About
Travel isn’t only about checking famous landmarks off a list. It’s about the places you notice along the way, the stories behind them, and the unexpected moments that stay with you long after you leave.
That’s why our stories go beyond traditional destination guides. We look for the places that make a destination feel real — from independent cafés and local markets to scenic trails, historic neighborhoods, unusual attractions, beautiful hotels, national parks, quiet villages, and places that simply deserve a closer look.

Beyond the Famous Places
We love iconic destinations too. Paris, Rome, London, New York, Iceland, the Italian countryside — famous places can be famous for a reason.
But we don’t want to stop there.
We’re interested in the street next to the landmark, the café around the corner, the trail beyond the viewpoint, the village outside the city, and the place you might never have found if you followed the usual itinerary.
Because sometimes the best part of a trip is the thing you never planned to find.
Meet Daniel & Hatis
We’re Daniel and Hatis, the people behind More Than the Map.
We created this site because we believe discovering a place is about more than knowing where it is. It’s about being curious enough to look beyond the obvious and notice the details that make a destination unique.
More Than the Map is our place to share those discoveries — the destinations we want to explore, the places we would save for a future trip, the experiences that catch our attention, and the travel ideas that make us want to pack a bag and go.
Our Approach
We aim to make our guides useful, inspiring, and genuinely worth reading. We research destinations carefully, look beyond the most obvious recommendations, and focus on details that can help you decide what is actually worth your time.
When a place, hotel, experience, or product is included because of a commercial relationship or affiliate partnership, we’ll make that clear. Our goal is to give you useful ideas first — not simply more things to buy or places to visit.
Travel Is About What You Notice
We don’t just want to tell you where to go. We want to help you notice what’s there.
So take the famous road if you want to. Follow the itinerary. Visit the landmark. But leave a little room for curiosity.
Take the different street. Walk a little further. Stop for the coffee you weren’t planning to have. Open the door of the bookstore you almost walked past.
Look a little closer.
Discover what the map leaves out.
